BLR, KSR and EMM-5

 

The Beluk family of products consist of  the BLR series of Power Factor Controllers,  KSR Capacitor Protection Relay and EMM 5 Power Analyzer.
The BLR - CX controller is the latest in the BLR series, replacing the older BLR-CA, CB and CC models. The descriptions that follow provide some details about the BLR - CX (and also historic information on the older models for users who have these instruments installed now).

 

  • BLR-CX Standard Features
  • 4-quadrant measurement of reactive and constant supervision of inductive / capacitive load

The upper photograph shows the front of BLR-CX or BLR-CX-L. In addition to the standard features listed above, the “L” option provides a rear mounted temperature sensor and internal measuring circuits + output relay that may be used to control a fan when a preset temperature has been sensed. The preset temperature set points are 30° C, 35° C, 40° C  & 45° C.
Fan control option “L” is a simple and inexpensive way to monitor and control the cabinet temperature allowing any heated capacitors to cool down to their correct operating levels.
The “L” option also includes a second power factor target that is typically used for night tariff operation.

 

 

The lower image is the BLR-CX-M or BLR-CX-L-M. The “M” option adds the capability to select and display measured electrical system values in addition to the standard display of power factor. In order to accurately display system parameters, the CT and PT ratios must be entered into the instrument: this is performed using the “+” and “-” touch pads and only has to be entered one time as the values are stored in non-volatile memory. The BLR unit will normally display the measured power factor but at any time a user can select voltage, current, total active power, total reactive power or frequency using the same + and - pads. The selected parameter will be displayed until the user chooses to return the selection to power factor or other system value.

 

The rear of the BLR-CX is shown at the right.  Instrument supply voltage input (separate from the measurement voltage) is connected at the lower left along with “L” option temperature sensor plus connections for fan control and night tariff functions.


On the right are the connections for the CT, measurement voltage, alarm relay and the step control relays.


The BLX-CX series includes a basic TTL connector (upper left) that may be wired to a laptop computer through a TTL to RS232 converter (available separately from Illimite) This connection allows some simple data acquisition such as before / after cos phi values plus which step or steps were used in the compensation. The data is time tagged using the laptop’s system time.

 

   

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

   

   

Connection of all wiring is made by pushing down on a “tab” next to each conductor’s location; this opens the wire clamp cage allowing a stripped wire to enter, releasing the ‘tab’ again retains the wire through the cage’s spring pressure and the connection is complete. This time saving method uses a small flat blade screwdriver to apply the pressure to the tab.

 

 

   
   

A  panel cutout of 138 x 138 mm is required to mount the BLR-CX. For retrofit applications where an existing 137 x 137 mm opening is to be used, 8 small locating tabs are simply removed and the instrument will fit precisely. Two mounting clamps are molded into the instrument case providing fast and secure retention of the BLR-CX in the panel or cabinet

When developing the BLR series of power factor controllers, the Beluk engineerinig staff attached great importance to simplicity of installation and operation . With the new design of the products, each instrument automatically sets up after a few simple switch settings by the installer. It is no longer necessary to select the starting current (C/k value) or a fixed switching program.
The relays start working as soon as they have been correctly connected and they will always select the most appropriate capacitor step size. The recognition of the values of capacitor steps is achieved without unnecessary test switchings and instead is based on values obtained during the daily operating routine of reactive load compensation.
